Photographing the exquisite experience of childbirth for the first time in 1975, I longed for everyone to see what I was witnessing… courage, strength, love, passion in the grace of woman giving birth, babe being born. The profound emotional, bodily, social and spiritual realms came into utterly clear focus.
I followed my longing to make visible the elemental reality of birth that was seldom seen. Along the way I became a midwife. Women called me to attend them. Midwives asked me to join them.
My three sons and their father encouraged me with abiding belief in the value of what I was doing. I continue to appreciate their trust and understanding, deeply in my heart, and beyond words.
Birth is metaphor for the whole of life. I explore this belief as I continue to photograph the nature of being after we have been brought to this earth by birth. I am guided by the mystery and awe one feels in the presence of the sacred.
